Children and teens with social skills difficulties needed guided support and encouragement to help them visualize and put into effect new ways of connecting and staying connected to peers. In our social skills groups, therapists facilitate various practice scenarios in a fun and encouraging way so that children can improve their abilities to communicate with peers and authority figures. Our groups use behavioral principles such as reinforcement and extinction to focus on each child’s target areas. We aim to help improve each group member’s overall self-confidence, ability to make and keep friends, and management of impulses and emotions. Children are encouraged to implement what is learned in group into their outside environment through role play and cope ahead planning.
